Qixi - Happy Chinese Valentine's Day! f 22, 2023

Qixi, also known as the Chinese Valentine’s Day, falls annually on the 7th day of the 7th month in Chinese lunar calendar. This year it is celebrated on August 22, 2023.

Qixi Festival dates back to as early as the Han Dynasty (206BC-220AD), which commemorates the legend of the annual meeting between the mythological figures, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl. However, the Cowherd is a humble man on the earth while the Weaver Girl is a fairy from the heaven, the two fell in love at first sight by an occasion when the fairy toured on the earth, and secretly got married, had two kids together. The Weaver Girl’s mother was furious to discover what happened, who immediately brought the Weaver Girl back to heaven. Then she separated the couple by casting a massive river between the earth and heaven (now referred to as the Milky Way). Magically, touched by the love between the couple, facing their cruel dilemma, a flock of magpies on land flew up to the sky and formed a bridge across the river, helping the two to reunite. On seeing the magnificent scene, the Weaver Girl’s mother was quite moved, who eventually permitted the couple to meet once a year on that very same day, which was the 7th day of the 7th lunar month.

Therefore, over the years, the legend of the Cowherd and Weaver Girl is associated with the indivisible love and loyalty between the couple. Traditionally, young ladies would pray to the Weaver Girl, wishing for dexterity in skills such as weaving, sewing and spinning. Also, the ancient Chinese worshipped the Weaver Fairy, involved a table of offerings such as wine, tea, fruits, red dates, hazelnuts, peanuts and melon seeds. Under the moonlight, the young ladies gathered around the table, displaying their needlework, conveying their wishes to the Weaver Fairy and praying for a good husband and a happy life. Afterwards, they would read poems or play games until midnight. As for the children, they picked bunches of wildflowers and hung them on the horns of oxen in honor of the legendary ox that helped the Cowherd to support his family with hard work.

As time goes by, significant changes have taken place in different aspects of the society. So does the way of celebrating the Qixi Festival in modern times. In recent days, instead of adhering to traditional customs, young lovers express their love for each other by exchanging flowers, chocolates, jewelry, handmade crafts and other small gifts. At night, the couples enjoy romantic dates by joining the parties, gatherings, special outing or scenic walks. Of course, an intimate dinner with the love one to start the night is the most common.

Meanwhile, the Qixi Festival has become a way of meeting new friends or seeking potential partners. Companies encourage the singles to join in the activities and get to know others, and the Qixi Festival becomes part of the social events of the younger generation.
